On
Thursday 5 October a gathering was arranged at Åmot Ungdomsskole,
with the topic mental health. The pupils in the 9th grade
had used about 50 lessons working with the project.
As an ending of it, the results were shown to an audience
consisting of about 150 people, including parents, pupils, teachers
and other interested.
The
project started three week ahead of the gathering. Before the pupils
chose a topic, they all listened to a handful of external lecturers.
Those pupils who chose the same topics formed groups.
The
48 pupils involved, were divided into 15 different groups. The topics
chosen were drug abuse, phobias,
schizophrenia, rape, incest, maltreating of children, what it’s like
to grow up with foster parents, and what it’s like to be a child
with divorced parents. Each group had to find their own way of
approaching a problem and use it as a basis for the project.
The
pupils gathered information from the library, the Internet, the local
health centre and other currant sources.
During
the evening, when the results were presented, the presentations were
many and of great variety. The pupils had done a solid work and learnt
a lot about the different aspects of mental health. They dealt with
effects, consequences and physical and mental sufferings, with the
chosen topics as a basis.
The
results were presented through role-play, lectures and Internet sights.
Candles and music were also used. Many of the groups had also used
advanced technology to present their work, for instant PowerPoint
presentations and self produced videos. This work demands a great deal
of technical insight and knowledge.
This
was some of the work the pupils presented to the audience

The
gathering was opened in
the school canteen by three of the groups who presented their work to
the audience. After this session, it was all set for the other groups.
Each group had their own room where they presented their work. The
groups presented their own topics two times. The audience had
therefore, within one hour, the opportunity to choose four of the
topics they found interesting.
After
a coffee break the evening was ended with a lecture by Roger Bonsak.
He presented the topic: “How is it to have a youth at home?”
Bonsak did not only end the evening, he also ended a successful
project.
